Analyzing Websites

Without analytics, no serious website would exist. You should know what the customers are doing, who your visitors are and what they want to do. Web analytics provides a way to understand the user base and make modifications that are necessary to the demands of visitors or to attract new users.

How to analyze your website

Analyzing Websites · Set your goals. Before starting your journey in analytics, you should be able to determine why your website exists and your desires or plans to make out of it. Make your goals and take note of it so you can review it once a week or in a month. This will help you keep track of the purpose of your website.

· Select web analytics software. The most popular and well-known is the Google Analytics. It is more than enough for those medium and small sized companies. But with large corporations, they should be served by a premium provider like the Omniture. But it is suggested to start with Google Analytics for those starting companies so that one can be used to the different metrics and dimensions.

· Set up your web analytics software. If you’re using Google Analytics, what you only need to do is just paste the code from Google Analytics to the footer so that setting up is started. But if you have WordPress site, there are plugins available to make the setting up of Google Analytics faster and easier. To those who use premium providers, there are consultants who will help you with the setting up process.

· Know the Dimensions. Omiture, Google Analytics, and other providers have Dimensions. Dimensions define a content source, search referral information, time period and so on. Usually, reports use content dimensions like page titles and time dimensions. Example: a day, week or month.

· Know the Metrics. All providers must use metrics. These metrics will tell you “how many” or “how much” are applied in a dimension. Example: a report shows the visits metric in a dimension of a day. This means that you are looking at how many visits are there in a day to your website. Dimensions and metrics should be utilized hand in hand to make sense.

· Analyze the traffic. You may start to build reports based on your goals when you are already getting traffics. You do not need a lot of dimensions, reports or metrics to have insights. You just need to use what you think will help you best understand your progression based on your goals. It is suggested to start with time dimension with page title dimension which uses Visits, Unique Visitors, Bounce Rate, % New Visits and Page Views. This will allow you to understand the number of people that are accessing in your website and what they love to do.
